David and Goliath: Sessions 1 - 3
Session 1: David arrives at the Battle Camp.
David was the youngest of seven sons of Jesse of Bethlehem. David’s job was to look after his father’s sheep. He had been chosen by God to become the king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:6-12). The election of David by God appeared strange as he chose the youngest of the brothers who did not have the taller stature. David knew and loved the Lord; God chose David because God knew his heart.
Session 2: David is sent to battle Goliath. The story of David and Goliath comes into the picture as God was preparing David to become king of Israel. The first public appearance of David was when he was a young shepherd and he defeated Goliath. This took place when Israel was about to go to battle with the Philistines. The Philistines were age-old enemies of Israel. At one stage they had managed to capture the Ark of the Covenant, the most prized possession of Israel, as this was where God dwelt among the Israelites.
Session3: Goliath is slayed.
Through Moses, God formed his people into the nation of Israel. Moses led the people out of slavery in Egypt and for 40 years they wandered in the desert as God taught them through the events of their lives that he is the one true God. Once they are in the Promised Land God continued to form his people. Because they were surrounded by pagan nations, the Israelites fell away from God and even desired to have a king so they would be like the other nations. What they did not realize was that God was already their King.
